ATEX electrical work in London: what clients need to know
Hazardous area electrical installations need competent, certified engineers. A plain guide to ATEX zones, equipment and inspection.

Plant rooms, fuel stores, battery rooms and some data centre areas can be classed as hazardous areas under DSEAR. Electrical work there must follow ATEX and BS EN 60079 requirements.
The basics
The key points to cover:
- Zones 0, 1 and 2 describe how likely an explosive gas atmosphere is
- Equipment must be ATEX-certified for the zone and gas group
- Installations need initial and periodic inspection under BS EN 60079-17
- Records should be kept in a hazardous area verification dossier
